Darla was rescued in the spring from puppy mill life. She was very timid and found it hard to trust people but after a few months in rescue, she has blossomed. Her foster home has two bullmastiffs and a dachshund that she gets along with great. She has a wonderful time playing with them in the back yard and exploring. She trots from one side of the yard to the other with her tail wagging and tongue out. She also loves exploring the garden and finding fresh veggies to eat. She is particularly fond of cucumbers.
Darla has learned a lot from the resident dogs and we would like to place her in a home with another dog so she can continue to have the doggie companionship she enjoys so much. It took a long time for Darla to get comfortable taking treats or seek attention from humans but she made steady progress trusting humans. She is sweet dog with an excellent temperament and a quick learner. Darla has been learning basic commands, is crate trained and reliably house broken. Her new family will need to continue with training and be patient and encouraging when she shows her timid side.
Darla’s ideal day consists of rising early and having playtime outside with the dogs before it gets too hot. Throughout the day she is content laying under the table behind her foster mom’s desk and playing with her toys. In the evening she wants to play in the den or outside. Before bed she wants her daily snuggle time with her foster dad. One of her favorite activities is to play ring around the patio table with her foster mom when her foster mom is trying to get her inside. She has a mischievous side.
As with many dogs rescued from puppy mill life, Darla has a tendency to chew and ingest things she shouldn’t – socks, small toys, etc. Dog toys need to be appropriately sized for bullmastiffs so she can’t swallow them. Because of this tendency, it would be best for Darla to not go to a home with children under 5. She is great with the older kids in her foster home but a home with small children and all the toys and clutter that come with having toddlers would be too tempting for her.
Darla was two years old in February. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and on heartworm preventative.
If your family would like to provide Darla with the home she deserves, please complete an adoption application. She is being fostered in MS. However, don’t let her location be a barrier. If you think she is the bullmastiff for your family, BRI can arrange her transport!
