DARYL
This little beefcake is Darryl! Born on Jan 4, 2016 and currently 28 lbs, he is a typical, goofy puppy! He is VERY friendly, outgoing and loves life! He has been a very easy puppy, as puppies go. He is active but not hyper, he sleeps through the night, loves other dogs and takes correction from them very well. He is already learning commands and he is smart! Darryl is coming along on his house training but obviously at 12 weeks old, he will need continued training. But he crates perfectly while home along and at night. He is a VERY sweet and affectionate little guy. Someday, he will even grow into his feet!
Sadly, Darryl was born with a condition that mastiffs are predisposed to……Persistent Pupillary Membrane (PPM). It’s a condition that affects his eyes/vision and is not correctible. Right now, Darryl has impaired vision but he sees fairly well as you can see in his video. The long-term prognosis is somewhat up in the air. Best case, he will live with impaired vision and likely require daily eye drops. Worst case, he will lose his vision completely and then be at risk of developing glaucoma. Depending on the severity of the glaucoma, it could actually require surgical removal of the eyes. BUT…..this is worst case scenario. AND, blind dogs get around just fine! Although, another dog in the home would be helpful to help give him a reference point (not to mention, he would LOVE a doggie friend!)
He also had Entropion in both eyes. This is a condition where the eyelids turn inward into the eye and the lashes rub on the cornea. Thankfully, this IS correctible with surgery! Because of his young age and continued growth, his eyelids could not be permanently corrected yet but they have been temporarily surgically corrected. In the near future, he will need additional surgery to have this corrected. BRI will pay for his entropion and neuter surgery at a vet we agree to. We have a follow-up appointment with the Ophthalmologist on April 18 and at that time, he will be ready to go! And we may know more at that time about his long-term prognosis. But it would be wonderful to have his home lined up by then!
Darryl’s ideal home will have another doggie friend, minimal stairs due to his vision, and one where he can be let out mid-day until he is a little older. At his young age, his bladder is not big enough yet to hold it for 8 or 9 hours. And of course, a home with lots of love to give! Daryl is being fostered in Michigan and our volunteers will help transport him to an approved adoptive home.
