4 year old Poppy was heartworm positive when we took her from a TX shelter a year ago, and she also had a slightly swollen foot. She didn’t seem uncomfortable and a number of vets examined the foot and felt there wasn’t anything concerning, so we opted to treat the heartworms first. Then she could be safely spayed and have the foot addressed after she was heartworm free. Her surgery went well, and the foot was checked again. Unfortunately, a month or so after her spay surgery, the foot blew up to twice its normal size overnight and continued to grow almost daily. She had developed an aggressive form of cancer and despite their best efforts to remove the tumor, there was no way to get it all as it had spread deeply into her foot and was embedded and entwined in her bones and muscles. At the moment, she has no idea that she’s unwell, and she is living a normal life with her foster family. Her favorite activities are camping and exploring, and she’s living her best life in our hands.
