Shelby came from a dog sanctuary in Turkey. She arrived at JFK airport after a 13-hour plane
ride with a group of other dogs. She has a passport from Turkey! Her personality has been
consistent from the beginning – gentle, sweet and eager to please. She has beautiful, deep,
trusting eyes. Like so many rescued dogs, Shelby is remarkably adaptable. She has adjusted
well and welcomed all new experiences. She was a star at the veterinarian’s, enjoys car rides,
likes to be close by when people are home and enjoys good scratches and snuggles. We do
not have young children but we do have a busy household with lots of people in and out. She
has done consistently well with everyone she has met.
Shelby is spayed, microchipped, HW- and current with all vaccinations. Shelby has had blood
work and fecal testing. She is healthy and determined to be between 5-7 years old. Shelby is
gentle and not fussy about having her ears cleaned or nails trimmed. While healthy, Shelby was
in poor condition when she arrived and had no stamina. She is now more active
throughout the day patrolling the fenced in backyard, chasing squirrels and playing with her dog
friend. Recently, she did well on a 1-mile walk. She is still a true bullmastiff so likes to sleep for
long periods of time throughout the day.
Shelby gets along well with other dogs - a well-set up introduction to new dogs is important.
She is currently living with a young female bullmastiff and is neither dominant or passive. They
share the same toys although bones caused a bit of a snarl so they were removed from the toy
basket. Shelby will run around outside and play for a bit but she still tires easily. Shelby and her
friend eat in separate areas but are together with no food aggression during meal prep, meal
clean-up or getting treats during the day.
Shelby is very alert to and will chase squirrels and birds. When she is on a leash, she can be
redirected but not when she is off lead. Twice when following a scent, she found her way under
and over a fence. She is not a run-away but seems to enjoy wandering and exploring so
a high, secure fence is a must.
Shelby is housetrained and has learned to signal when she has to go out by sitting by the door.
She is just learning her name and does not know any obedience commands but will sit for a
treat. She is food motivated and eager to please so she should be easy to train. She will sleep
on a dog bed but prefers the couch. She has proven herself a counter-surfer and garbage-getter
so it will be important to keep food out of easy reach and garbage secure.
Shelby’s ideal family is one who wants a low-key, quiet, loyal companion dog. She likes nothing
more than to nap nearby, to be given a nice scratch or to have a chance to wander and sniff
around the yard. She enjoys canine companionship as long as the dog can respect how a more
mature dog likes to spend her days. NO CATS OR FOWL OR RODENT-TYPE PETS. Shelby will
need a securely fenced backyard ideally that has a good size since she likes to wander and sniff.
Her adopted family should know how to teach and reinforce basic commands - Shelby will learn
quickly. It will be important for her adopted family to set her up to succeed – even when she
understands it is wrong, Shelby might never be able to be trusted to not counter-surf or get into
the garbage or not chase a squirrel.
If your family would like to provide Shelby with the home she deserves, please complete the
adoption application at https://www.bullmastiffrescuers.net/forms.html You can complete an
online version or download the application in Word.
We require a donation ranging from $100 to $600 for each adoption. The donation is based on
the age and health of the dog being adopted as well as its level of training. 100% of donations
are directed to the veterinary expenses of the dogs in our care.
Shelby is being fostered in New Jersey; however, don’t let location be a barrier, BRI can
arrange transport to many states east of the Mississippi!
